Satellite NO2 Data Points to Higher Winter Fossil Fuel Emissions in Europe Than Official Inventories Show
bioengineer.orgResearchers from the University of Edinburgh and TNO used TROPOMI satellite nitrogen dioxide observations to estimate fossil fuel CO2 emissions across Europe. The study, published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, found that official inventories may undercount winter emissions, with satellite-derived estimates running 10% to 177% higher on cold days. Country-level annual increases ranged from 20% in the UK to 91% in Turkey, mainly from domestic heating that bottom-up inventories miss. Using an ensemble data assimilation system with GEOS-Chem, the team cut mean uncertainty in total European fossil fuel CO2 estimates from 5.6% to 3.3%. The method is a proof of concept rather than a definitive correction, and the authors note that fixed NOx to CO2 ratios and limited single-overpass coverage leave room for error. Co-located CO2 and NO2 missions like CO2M could make satellite-based verification of national emissions claims much stronger.
