A study by the UCLA Stop Methane Project using Carbon Mapper satellite data has placed landfills in Mumbai and Secunderabad among the top 25 methane emitting waste sites globally. The research tracked nearly 3,000 methane plumes, highlighting the severe environmental impact of unmanaged urban waste in India. Methane is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term, contributing to nearly 30 percent of the global temperature rise since the Industrial Revolution. The findings underscore an urgent need for better waste segregation and methane capture systems to reduce these high emission levels.
