Sasol has signed its first commercial agreement to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to White Desert, the company that runs luxury expeditions to Antarctica. The fuel is co-processed at Sasol's Natref refinery in Sasolburg using used cooking oil collected from South African sources. Sasol says the fuel cuts carbon emissions by about 75% compared with conventional jet fuel. Current output is 1 to 2 million litres per year, with a target of 15 million litres by the end of 2027. The company also plans to expand its Secunda plant as demand grows. SAF remains two to three times more expensive than conventional jet fuel, so early buyers are niche operators with net zero commitments rather than mainstream airlines.
