Sarawak's Premier has ordered a scientific study into natural hydrogen reserves after reports of gas emissions during construction work in Lawas and Gedong. The state-owned petroleum company PETROS and scientists from the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability will lead the research. The Premier noted that peat-rich areas may produce hydrogen through underground compression of water and organic matter, but stressed that commercial viability depends on volume. Natural hydrogen, if found in sufficient quantities, could provide a low-carbon energy source without the need for electrolysis or steam methane reforming. The Premier pointed to methane as a potential indicator, since its chemical structure contains hydrogen. However, he emphasized that only field research by geologists and scientists can confirm whether the gas seeps are linked to commercially significant hydrogen deposits. This exploration effort positions Sarawak as a potential player in the emerging natural hydrogen sector, which has attracted interest from governments and energy companies worldwide. If confirmed, the reserves could diversify the region's energy mix and support decarbonization goals. The study results will determine whether further investment in extraction and infrastructure is warranted.
