Sarawak Premier: Baram road and bridge projects could enable carbon trading in remote areas
dayakdaily.comNew road and bridge projects in Baram, Sarawak could open the region to carbon trading, according to Premier Abang Johari. Speaking at a Deepavali event in Kuching, he said better connectivity would end the isolation of rural communities and allow them to use modern technology, including carbon markets. The route from Marudi to the Ulu area spans about 140 kilometres, with one bridge already completed. The statement links infrastructure access to carbon market participation, but leaves key questions open. Carbon trading requires reliable measurement of emissions or sequestration, clear land ownership rules, and a functioning registry. Roads may improve access for communities, yet they can also increase pressure on forests. For Baram to realize carbon revenue, Sarawak will need more than new roads.
