Malaysia's first blue carbon licence has been issued in Sarawak, covering 4,788 hectares of mangrove forest in the Rajang Delta. The licence, granted to Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Kuala Rajang, is part of a broader push to turn forest ecosystems into carbon assets. A separate licence covers 26,353 hectares of inland forest in Ulu Baram held by Shin Yang Sdn Bhd. The Sarawak government says the projects support conservation and green development, but a licence alone does not create carbon credits. Projects still need to meet an accepted carbon standard and pass validation and verification before any credits can be issued. That distinction matters because the financial value depends on actual verified sequestration.
