Sarawak forest carbon update: 3 licences approved, 8 study permits cover 179,327 hectares
dayakdaily.comSarawak's natural resources minister told the state assembly that 11 entities are involved in forest carbon activities. Three Forest Carbon Licences have been approved covering 56,806 hectares, and one of those is now undergoing validation by an international validation and verification body. Eight more entities hold Carbon Study Permits covering 179,327 hectares, but those permits do not allow trading. They only allow work on the Sarawak Project Design Document needed to apply for a full licence. The update also confirms one Carbon Study Permit has been issued for a blue carbon project, excluding the Paloh and Serdeng areas, while no applications have been received for carbon projects in the Daro area. The split between study permits and licences matters because only licensed projects can trade credits under the Forests (Forest Carbon Activity) Rules, 2022. Most of the area in the pipeline is still pre-licence.
