SANEDI and UNIDO launch 5 year project to boost EV battery value chains in South Africa
greenbuildingafrica.co.zaSouth Africa has launched a five year project backed by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by UNIDO and SANEDI to strengthen electric vehicle battery value chains. The initiative focuses on local manufacturing, battery testing and certification, recycling, second life battery use, and workforce development. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while building industrial competitiveness and supporting a just energy transition. The project brings together government departments including trade, industry, environment, and transport. Key next steps include setting up a project management unit at SANEDI, forming a steering committee, and engaging the private sector. The initiative will also be presented at the Africa Electric Mobility Conference in Cape Town later this year as a platform for continental collaboration. South Africa's existing automotive sector, engineering capacity, and access to critical minerals give it a strong starting point. The goal is to move from being an end user of clean energy technology to an active participant in global battery supply chains, creating jobs and exports along the way.
