Sandwell Reform UK motion would scrap climate emergency declaration and carbon neutral targets
expressandstar.comReform UK councillors in Sandwell have tabled a motion to cancel the climate emergency declaration passed by the previous Labour administration in 2020. The declaration committed the council to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and the wider borough by 2041. The new motion makes no reference to climate change or net zero and instead frames environmental work as one priority among many. If passed, the motion would rescind the emergency declaration, remove climate action as a council priority, and order officers to review all related strategies and communications. Deputy leader Gary Dale says the council should focus on housing, economic growth, skills, and deprivation. He says environmental sustainability will still be considered, but not treated as a standalone emergency. Local climate commitments often depend on council declarations to secure funding and staff focus. Removing that status does not cancel existing projects, but it changes how future decisions are weighed. The vote is set for the next full council meeting.
