Samsung Heavy Industries has received approval in principle from DNV for a battery hybrid system designed for shuttle tankers. The system uses batteries to supply auxiliary power for position holding, reducing engine load and improving power stability while the vessel stays on station during crude oil loading. Shuttle tankers burn fuel continuously for two to three days during offshore loading. Adding battery capacity cuts fuel use and carbon tax exposure, and it can prevent loading delays if a thruster fails. Samsung says the approval supports its push into eco-friendly vessel designs, alongside other projects like FLNG and floating data centers.
