Samoa launches first low-carbon ferry network with five solar-electric catamarans from McKay
itbrief.co.nzMcKay has delivered five solar-powered, battery-electric passenger catamarans to Samoa, giving the country its first low-carbon ferry network. The boats run between Manono and Namu'a islands off Upolu. They replace petrol-powered passenger transport with electric drive, and the first vessel has reportedly gone six months in service without needing a charge. The project sits under the CAP-IT programme, part of a $37m Japanese funded Green Transformation initiative implemented by UNDP. Samoa received $15.3m. Four of the five boats were built locally in Samoa, with McKay staff training local workers to assemble kitsets and install propulsion systems. That local capability is meant to keep maintenance in-country rather than depending on outside support.
