Salzgitter has secured a green hydrogen supply agreement to power its low-carbon steel production project in Germany. The deal is a key step for the company's SALCOS program, which aims to replace coal-based blast furnaces with hydrogen direct reduction. This shift could cut CO2 emissions from steelmaking by up to 95%. Green hydrogen will be produced using renewable electricity and supplied via pipeline to Salzgitter's site. The project is part of Germany's broader push to decarbonize heavy industry, which accounts for a significant share of national emissions. Steel production alone is responsible for roughly 7% of global CO2 emissions. While the announcement is positive, the timeline and scale of hydrogen production remain critical. Green hydrogen is still expensive and limited in supply. The success of this project will depend on building out electrolyzer capacity and securing affordable renewable power. If executed, it could serve as a blueprint for other industrial decarbonization efforts in Europe.
