Salzgitter SALCOS green steel coil: Low-carbon steel for cars, appliances, and wind towers

Salzgitter's SALCOS program is now producing green steel coil that looks and handles like conventional steel but carries a much lower CO2 footprint. The steel is made using direct reduction units and electric arc furnaces instead of traditional blast furnaces, cutting embedded emissions without changing how the metal performs on the factory floor. Automakers, appliance brands, and wind tower fabricators are the primary targets. The coil works with existing presses and welding robots, so buyers can lower their scope-3 emissions without retooling. Each shipment comes with a CO2 certificate that procurement teams can use in ESG reporting and competitive bids. Volume is still limited and the product carries a premium over standard steel, reflecting the cost of clean power and hydrogen. Salzgitter's phased transformation means smaller buyers may face wait times or hybrid allocations. The program is a key test of whether heavy industry can cut emissions while staying competitive in core markets.
