Salzgitter and Zelestra Sign Germany's Largest Hybrid Solar-Storage PPA for Steel Decarbonization
energynews.proGerman steelmaker Salzgitter Flachstahl has signed a hybrid solar-storage PPA with developer Zelestra, the largest of its kind in Germany. The deal covers 147 MW of solar capacity, about 158 GWh per year, plus 79 MW / 237 MWh of battery storage across two plants in Brandenburg and Thuringia. Salzgitter will control the batteries, which are charged only from surplus solar output, to match renewable supply with industrial demand. The contract supports Salzgitter's SALCOS program, which aims to shift steel production to lower-carbon processes. Zelestra will build, own and operate the plants, and says it has more than 2 GW of solar, hybrid, wind and storage projects in Germany. No start date or emissions reduction figures were included in the announcement.
