Researchers at CSIR-CIMFR have developed SALT, a mobile liquid tree that uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen in polluted urban areas where planting real trees is not possible. The unit is compact, can run on solar or electric power, and is already installed at sites in Dhanbad and Singrauli. It is designed for transport hubs, industrial zones, and other space constrained public spaces. SALT is not a replacement for real trees, which provide shade, biodiversity, and cooling. It is a targeted tool for locations where soil and space are limited. The team is working on commercial production and affordability for residential use. The device uses photosynthesis to capture CO2 and can operate under artificial light, making it a flexible option for dense urban environments with poor air quality.
