Saipem has been awarded an engineering, procurement and fabrication contract by Nordic Ren-Gas for a carbon capture unit at its planned e-methane facility in Tampere, Finland. This will be the first full-scale application of Saipem's proprietary CO2 Solutions technology with the industrialised Bluenzyme 200 solution. The unit is designed to capture about 40,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 per year from existing flue gases at the Tarastenjarvi circular economy area. The captured CO2 will be combined with renewable hydrogen from a 50MW electrolyser supplied by Sunfire to produce synthetic methane via methanation. The facility is expected to generate around 200 GWh of renewable synthetic methane annually, which will be distributed through existing gas infrastructure for heavy-duty road transport in Germany. Waste heat from the process will feed Tampere's district heating network, adding efficiency to the power-to-gas system. Ren-Gas anticipates first production in 2028, with a planned expansion phase that would double capacity. The contract becomes effective once Ren-Gas makes its final investment decision. This project illustrates how carbon capture, hydrogen, and district heating can be integrated into a single decarbonization solution.
