Sainsbury's is phasing out brown eggs across all its own brand lines and switching to white eggs. The retailer says white eggs have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint because white feathered hens eat less feed, live longer, and lay eggs for a longer period. The change also improves animal welfare since white hens are less prone to feather pecking. The supermarket is working with suppliers to transition all own brand eggs to white shells. White eggs are already common in restaurants but rarely seen on UK supermarket shelves. Sainsbury's says the taste and nutrition are the same as brown eggs. The move is part of the company's long term goals for a more sustainable UK food system.
