SAF Roadmaps Overshoot Planetary Limits, Study Finds: What Corporate Buyers Should Ask
environmentenergyleader.comNew research in Nature Communications finds that aviation roadmaps built on sustainable aviation fuel still breach key planetary boundaries through 2050. The authors modeled ICAO, ATAG, and ReFuelEU scenarios against the planetary boundaries framework. Every scenario crossed climate change and biosphere integrity limits, and e-SAF made with grid electricity carried freshwater impacts 131% higher than e-SAF from renewable power. The study does not rank suppliers, but it gives corporate SAF buyers a practical checklist. A lifecycle carbon score says little about the land, water, energy, and CO2 capture requirements behind a fuel. Buyers can ask which feedstock and pathway was used, whether the reduction was measured or modeled, and for e-SAF, where the electricity and carbon came from. The authors conclude that fuel substitution alone cannot keep aviation within safe limits and call for demand-side policy alongside supply-side measures. For companies, that points to weighing SAF purchases against travel policy, not treating certificates as a standalone solution.
