Ryanair's total greenhouse gas emissions rose to 12.3 million tonnes in 2025, marking a 2 percent increase from the previous year. While the airline has reduced carbon intensity per passenger by updating its fleet, rapid growth in flight volume has offset these efficiency gains, leading to a total emissions increase of two thirds over the last decade. The airline faces significant costs to comply with the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandates, with projected spending of up to 1.5 billion euros. Management continues to criticize the ETS for only covering intra-European flights, while the EU considers expanding the scope of the carbon market to international routes.
