Rwandan and Ugandan Scientists Win $150,000 Grant to Study Congo Basin Climate Resilience
streamlinefeed.co.keTwo early-career researchers, Dr. Olivier Manzi from Rwanda and Dr. John Paul Makumbi from Uganda, will share the 2026 Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant. The $150,000 award, selected from 747 applicants, funds up to three years of work on the Congo Basin's hidden climate risks. Manzi will measure how close Central African trees are to hydraulic failure under heat and drought, while Makumbi will use microbial DNA sequencing and machine learning to build early warning systems for freshwater pollution. Together the projects address a gap in how the Congo Basin is monitored. Satellite images can show forest cover loss, but they do not show physiological stress that could signal a tipping point. If the basin's carbon sink is less resilient than it appears, that has direct implications for global carbon budgets and adaptation policy. The grant also marks a shift by putting funding and research leadership in the hands of African institutions rather than foreign teams.
