Russian scientists have developed a bio-kerosene fuel derived from organic waste that could serve as an alternative to conventional jet fuel. The research also suggests the new fuel may reduce aircraft noise, according to a report from Pravda. While still in early stages, the approach targets two challenges at once: cutting emissions from aviation and finding a use for waste streams. Aviation is a hard sector to decarbonize, so any practical substitute for fossil jet fuel matters. The key question is whether this bio-kerosene can be produced at scale and at a competitive price. If the waste feedstock is abundant and the process is energy efficient, it could become a viable option for airlines looking to lower their carbon footprint. Further testing will be needed to verify both the emission reductions and the noise benefits.
