Royal Mail has launched a £1 million green skills fund to help UK small and medium businesses train workers in low-carbon trades like heat pump installation, solar panel fitting, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The money comes from the company's apprenticeship levy and is available to businesses in England and Wales. The fund targets the growing mismatch between the jobs created by the clean energy transition and the number of qualified workers available to fill them. The UK government expects the clean energy sector to support over 860,000 jobs by 2030, roughly double the current workforce. Royal Mail's fund covers government-approved green apprenticeships ranging from hands-on trades to degree-level environmental practitioner roles. For SME owners, this is a chance to build green capability at no direct cost, since the levy money would otherwise lapse. Royal Mail frames the initiative as a practical investment in the conditions it needs to hit its own net-zero 2040 target. With the company delivering to all 32 million UK addresses, its decarbonisation depends on suppliers and customers having the skills to install and maintain low-carbon infrastructure. The fund is open now, and applications are being accepted through Royal Mail's Levy Transfer Fund page.
