Rolls-Royce has run a modified Pearl 15 jet engine on 100% hydrogen at full takeoff power, marking a milestone in hydrogen aviation. The test at NASA's Stennis Space Center simulated a full flight cycle including startup, cruise, and landing. Engineers focused on combustion, fuel controls, and safety systems, working with the UK Health and Safety Executive to design high-pressure hydrogen infrastructure. The hard part is not just burning hydrogen in the engine. Hydrogen is lighter by weight but more demanding by volume and handling. Airports would need new supply chains, storage, and refueling gear. Aircraft need redesigned tanks and fuel systems. The climate benefit also depends on how the hydrogen is produced and on managing non-CO2 impacts. This is one piece of aviation's decarbonization puzzle alongside sustainable aviation fuel, better engines, and improved operations. The test results will feed into future Rolls-Royce programs like UltraFan. Hydrogen airliners are not ready yet, but engineers now have a clearer picture of what safe hydrogen flight requires.
