RNG delivers carbon negative heavy duty trucking in California with 98% renewable fuel use in 2025
biomassmagazine.comA new report from The Transport Project, RNG Coalition, and the California Renewable Transportation Alliance shows that renewable natural gas (RNG) accounted for 98% of all on-road natural gas vehicle fuel in California in 2025. The average carbon intensity of bio-CNG was -198 gCO2e/MJ, making it the only fuel in the state's Low Carbon Fuel Standard program to achieve a negative carbon intensity fleet outcome. RNG made up just 6% of alternative fuel volume but generated over 25% of all CO2e reductions from on-road alternative fuels reported under the LCFS program. The report argues that RNG is the most cost effective immediate option for decarbonizing heavy duty trucking. It claims that $100 million in grant funding for RNG trucks delivers six times more GHG reductions and two times more criteria pollutant reductions than the same money spent on battery electric trucks. RNG trucks also benefit from an existing fueling network and do not rely on overseas supply chains for components. The groups behind the report want to see more diesel engines converted to RNG to scale these benefits beyond California.
