Rivian R2 Slashes Lifecycle Carbon Emissions by Half, Hitting 2030 Goal Early
eletric-vehicles.comRivian's new R2 midsize SUV has a lifecycle carbon footprint of 211 grams of CO2 equivalent per mile, half that of the original R1S, according to the company's first carbon footprint report. That means Rivian hit its 2030 target four years early. The assessment covers 200,000 miles and 10 years, and accounts for manufacturing, charging, materials, and end of life. Charging on the average US grid accounts for about half of the emissions, so where you charge matters a lot. Charging with renewables cuts the footprint to 111 grams per mile. Rivian also introduced a new disclosure standard, SAE J3341, to make lifecycle assessments more comparable across automakers. The R2 also uses more recycled materials, with a quarter of its mass from recycled or bio-based sources.
