Rivian R2 Cuts Lifecycle Carbon Emissions 50% Ahead of 2030, R3 and R4 to Be Cheaper
autoconnectedcar.comRivian's R2 lifecycle assessment shows 211 grams of CO2 per mile over 200,000 miles, a 50% cut from the R1S Launch Edition and four years ahead of its 2030 target. The report breaks down the 42.2 metric ton footprint, with charging electricity as the largest share at 21.2 tons, highlighting how grid mix affects EV emissions. It also documents 25% recycled or bio-based content by mass and the first use of SAE J3341 for automotive carbon reporting, which could standardize comparisons across manufacturers. Separately, CEO RJ Scaringe says the R3 will be priced materially lower than the R2, with the R4 going even further down. The R2's entry price is expected to fall to $45,000 by late 2027, while the R3 is targeted for the high $30,000s when production starts in Georgia in 2028. The R2's market success is critical, as Rivian still loses money per vehicle and needs volume to achieve supplier cost reductions.
