Rivian's latest impact report says the R2 has a lifecycle carbon footprint roughly half that of the R1S. The company points to lighter weight, improved aerodynamics, and a higher share of recycled materials, including floor mats made from 99% ocean waste and resin battery trays that are fully recycled. The R2 also includes smart charging that prioritizes off-peak grid times, which can reduce the carbon intensity of charging if the grid is cleaner during those hours. While the headline claim is notable, the specifics matter. Rivian says the R2 uses 25% recycled materials and that its interior is largely recyclable. The company also expanded its supplier screening for human rights and environmental impact. However, the report does not yet break down the full lifecycle assessment methodology, particularly around battery production and end-of-life treatment. That will be important for anyone looking to verify the number against other EVs or regulatory standards.
