Rio Tinto to supply Kitimat hydropower aluminium to RevoCast Langley billet plant
haidagwaiiobserver.comRio Tinto has signed a long-term agreement to supply aluminium from its Kitimat smelter in British Columbia to RevoCast Aluminum Billets Ltd. RevoCast will combine that primary metal with recycled scrap at its new casting facility in Langley, and Rio Tinto will exclusively market the resulting billet to North American manufacturers. The deal does not change production levels, jobs, or shifts at Kitimat. Kitimat aluminium is produced with hydropower, which gives it a relatively low carbon footprint for primary metal. Adding recycled content at the Langley remelt plant can lower the embodied emissions of the finished billet further, while bringing supply closer to customers. Rio Tinto has not disclosed volumes or contract length, and it has not said what energy source powers the Langley remelter. For buyers tracking embodied carbon, the key details are the scrap-to-primary ratio and the emissions from remelting. Even without those numbers, the deal shows a shift toward regional, lower-carbon aluminium supply chains in North America.
