Rio Tinto has commissioned a carbon capture trial at Shougang Group's Jingtang steel plant in China. The facility processes blast furnace gas and aims to capture up to 10,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. This is part of a 2022 memorandum of understanding between the two companies to research ways to cut emissions across the steel value chain. Steel production is a major source of industrial emissions, and carbon capture from blast furnace gas is one potential mitigation path. The trial is small in scale but marks a step toward testing the technology in a real operating environment. Success could influence future deployment in other steel plants, especially in regions with carbon pricing or stricter emissions rules.
