Rio Tinto Low-Carbon Aluminium Expansion: AP60 Quebec Smelter, Market Growth and Key Deals
openpr.comRio Tinto is commissioning a US$1.5 billion expansion of its AP60 smelter at Complexe Arvida in Quebec. The project adds about 160,000 metric tonnes of annual primary aluminium capacity, bringing total AP60 output at the site to roughly 220,000 tonnes once fully operational by the end of 2026. Because the smelter runs on hydro power, Rio Tinto expects the expansion to cut around 290,000 tonnes of CO2 per year compared with the older Arvida technology. The wider low-carbon aluminium market is growing as automakers, packaging companies, electrical infrastructure buyers and renewable energy developers ask for verified carbon intensity and traceable supply. DataM Intelligence values the market at US$90.45 billion in 2025 and projects it to reach about US$140 billion by 2035, a 4.5% CAGR. Europe is the largest value market, while Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region and the biggest production base. Recent developments show the sector moving beyond announcements. Rio Tinto and Prysmian supplied ELYSIS inert-anode aluminium for cables in an Amazon data center, and producers are consolidating around recycling and low-carbon primary supply. Producers without access to renewable power, efficient smelting technology or credible product-level carbon data will face more pressure as procurement rules tighten.
