Rio Tinto has begun commissioning a $1.5 billion expansion at its Complexe Arvida facility in Quebec. The project uses AP60 smelting technology and hydroelectric power to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to global industry averages. This expansion serves as a bridge toward ELYSIS technology, which uses inert anodes to eliminate all direct CO2 emissions from the smelting process. The facility is expected to increase annual primary aluminum production by 160,000 metric tons by the end of 2026.
