Rio Tinto has begun commissioning the AP60 smelter expansion at its Complexe Arvida site in Quebec. The 1.5 billion dollar project increases annual primary aluminium production by 160,000 metric tonnes using high-efficiency technology that significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions compared to industry averages. This expansion integrates with Quebec's hydropower grid to reduce emissions by approximately 290,000 tonnes per year. The project also serves as a bridge toward the ELYSYS carbon-free electrolysis technology, which aims to eliminate direct emissions from the smelting process entirely.
