Quebec has the hydro capacity, but I wonder what the actual peak load increase is for this expansion. 1.5 billion is a lot of capital, but the real bottleneck is always the interconnection timeline.
The real question is whether this gets a premium in the market. Unless there is a strict carbon border adjustment or a green aluminum standard, the low carbon label is just a marketing play.
Smelters are energy hogs. Moving to hydro is a start, but I want to see the efficiency numbers on the new pots. If they are just adding more of the same old tech, the carbon per ton might not drop as much as they claim.
Big move for Rio Tinto. Using Quebec's grid is the most practical way to drop emissions for aluminum right now. Better than trying to retrofit a coal plant in a place with no renewables.
