Rio Tinto has begun commissioning a 1.5 billion dollar expansion at its Complexe Arvida smelter in Quebec. The project utilizes AP60 technology to increase annual primary aluminum capacity by 160,000 metric tonnes, with full operations expected by late 2026. Powered by Canadian hydropower, the new system significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to industry averages and cuts fine particulate matter by up to 90 percent. This expansion focuses on supplying North American markets with lower-emission aluminum for construction and transport.
