Rio Tinto has begun commissioning a 1.5 billion dollar expansion at its Complexe Arvida smelter in Quebec. The project adds 96 new pots and increases annual primary aluminum capacity by 160,000 metric tonnes using AP60 technology. By combining this new technology with local hydropower, the plant aims to produce aluminum with only one sixth of the greenhouse gas emissions of the industry average. The project also supports the transition to ELYSIS carbon-free electrolysis, backed by a 100 million Canadian dollar government investment.
