Rio Tinto Expands Low-Carbon Aluminum Production in Quebec

Rio Tinto has begun commissioning a US$1.5 billion expansion at its Complexe Arvida smelter in Quebec. The project utilizes proprietary AP60 technology to increase annual aluminum production to 220,000 metric tonnes while significantly lowering carbon emissions per tonne produced. The expansion leverages hydroelectric power to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by approximately 290,000 tonnes annually compared to older facility technology. This move is part of a broader strategy to supply low-carbon aluminum to the transportation and construction sectors.
