Rio Tinto has begun commissioning a $1.5 billion expansion at its Complexe Arvida facility in Quebec. The project introduces AP60 smelting technology, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter compared to traditional smelting methods. Powered by hydropower, the new capacity will produce 160,000 additional tonnes of primary aluminium annually. This expansion serves as a bridge toward the ELYSIS technology, which aims to eliminate all direct emissions from the aluminium smelting process by producing oxygen instead of carbon dioxide.
