Rio Tinto has started a carbon capture trial at Shougang Group's Jingtang base in China, targeting CO2 from blast furnace gas. The unit processes up to 3,000 cubic meters of gas per hour and can capture 10,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. It's part of a 2022 MoU between the companies to cut emissions across the steel value chain. The trial is small relative to the steel plant's total output, but it tests a method that could apply to other sites. Steelmaking accounts for a large share of industrial CO2 emissions, so this kind of pilot matters for scaling carbon capture in heavy industry.
