Rio Tinto has secured a new power supply agreement with Hydro Tasmania to keep its Bell Bay aluminium smelter in northern Tasmania operating to at least 2031. The deal has backing from both the Tasmanian and Australian governments and avoids near term closure of the smelter, which draws baseload hydro power and supports port, rail, and transmission infrastructure in the region. Engineers and suppliers should read this for the grid and supply chain signals. The extension stabilizes demand for alumina, carbon anodes, and maintenance services through the decade. It also gives Rio Tinto a renewable-heavy electricity mix to point to in low-carbon procurement discussions, which could matter as buyers push for lower emissions aluminium.
