Rio Tinto and China's Shougang Group have started an industrial-scale carbon capture pilot at a steel plant in China. The setup processes up to 3,000 cubic meters of blast furnace gas per hour and is designed to capture about 10,000 tons of CO2 per year from ironmaking operations. The partners are also looking at converting captured carbon into syngas that could be reused in steel production. If that works, the idea is to recycle recovered carbon back into raw materials and energy. The project gives a real-world test of whether carbon capture can scale in steelmaking and where the costs and technical limits actually show up.
