Rio Tinto and China's Shougang Group have commissioned a carbon capture facility at Shougang's Jingtang steel operations in Hebei province. The unit captures CO2 from blast furnace gas, processing up to 3,000 cubic meters per hour and capturing up to 10,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. It builds on a smaller 2024 pilot and is part of a steel decarbonization partnership dating back to 2022. The companies are exploring converting captured CO2 into synthetic gas for reuse in steelmaking, which could cut the need for additional carbon inputs. Rio Tinto provided technical support for the project. The trial's cost, capture efficiency, and share of site emissions have not been disclosed, leaving questions about scalability and real-world impact.
