Chris Goggin, Director of Operations at Rinnai UK, argues that there is no single solution for decarbonising existing commercial and public buildings. Goggin advocates for a mixed technology approach where heat pumps handle base load space heating while high-efficiency gas systems cover peak hot water demand, combined with intelligent controls and thermal storage. This strategy reduces disruption, allows phased capital investment, and manages operational risk. Goggin also notes that EPC reforms and greater transparency on operational performance create an opportunity for facilities management teams to lead the transition.
