North Yorkshire Council is delivering about 50,000 new recycling bins to homes in Richmondshire as part of a county-wide standardisation of waste collections. From October, households will get alternate fortnightly collections: one for paper and card, another for glass, cans, plastics and cartons. The council says the change will cut collection costs, improve recycling quality and support its carbon reduction goals, pointing to survey results from Ryedale where 83% of residents were happy with the system. But the rollout has drawn pushback on social media. Some residents say there is no space to store two extra wheelie bins, especially in homes with little or no garden. Others argue the new bins are an upgrade over the current boxes and bags, which blow around in the wind. The council says residents will be written to ahead of deliveries and should keep existing boxes and bags for reuse. The tension between environmental aims and practical household constraints is a familiar one for local waste programmes.
