Rice University Students Develop Damage-Tolerant Carbon Fiber Composites for Aerospace
miragenews.comRice University students have developed a new architectural approach to carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. By integrating thermoplastic lattice interlayers inspired by nacre, the team created a material that maintains high strength and stiffness while preventing the sudden, brittle failures common in traditional aerospace composites. The research demonstrates a fourfold increase in energy absorption and improved interlaminar strength. This structural redesign allows cracks to develop more slowly and distribute across the material, enhancing safety and durability for spacecraft, aircraft, and other high-performance industrial systems.
