Students at Rice University have developed a new architectural approach to carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites. By integrating thermoplastic lattice interlayers, the team created a material that maintains high strength while preventing the sudden, brittle failures common in aerospace components. This structural redesign increases energy absorption by up to four times. The findings, published in Composites Part B, suggest that material performance can be improved through internal geometry rather than just chemical changes, offering potential safety and weight benefits for aircraft and spacecraft.
