Ricardo has completed a feasibility study under the FASTMOVE project to develop ammonia-powered marine engines for offshore support vessels. The study validated high-pressure dual-fuel combustion concepts, safety protocols for ammonia storage and bunkering, and used CFD simulations to optimize injection conditions. The goal is to create a single-cylinder engine prototype and eventually commercialize ammonia propulsion for the maritime sector, which is a major source of global emissions. The project is part of the UK SHORE program, which has allocated over 230 million pounds to maritime decarbonization since 2022. While the technology is still in the validation stage, the findings suggest ammonia could be a viable low-carbon marine fuel if safety and regulatory frameworks are properly managed. The shift could gradually reduce demand for fossil-based bunker fuels and increase demand for green ammonia and related infrastructure.
