RIBA to publish whole-life carbon data for 2026 Stirling Prize shortlist
facilitiesmanagement-now.comRIBA has confirmed it will publish whole-life carbon data for all six buildings on the 2026 Stirling Prize shortlist. The move follows pressure from Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), whose Less Taste: More Metrics campaign argues that awards should weigh environmental performance alongside aesthetics. The data will appear on the RIBA Journal site before the ceremony on 15 October. Starting next year, all entries to RIBA national awards will need to submit this data. Whole-life carbon includes both upfront embodied carbon and operational emissions. Of the six shortlisted projects, only Bennetts Associates' BEAM venue has publicly shared its figures, reporting 602 kgCO₂e/m² for upfront carbon (A1-A5). RIBA says the data is reviewed by sustainability experts at multiple stages, but there is no fixed weighting or pass/fail threshold against benchmarks like the 2030 Climate Challenge. ACAN chair Jeremy Till argues that a building cannot be considered the best if it fails the institute's own climate standards.
