Degraded peatlands in the UK act as significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions when eroded. Using engineered coir logs for gully blocking helps stabilize these landscapes, slow water runoff, and raise water tables to restart the carbon sequestration process. Unlike synthetic reinforcements, coir systems biodegrade naturally over time. This allows native vegetation to take over the structural role of the logs, ensuring long term carbon storage without leaving permanent plastic waste in the ecosystem.
