Annalise Guthrie, a doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas, is investigating how land use and climate change alter deep soil structures. Her research focuses on the movement of organic carbon through soil and how these physical changes impact long term carbon storage and ecosystem productivity. By analyzing data from over 4,000 sites across the U.S., the study examines the transition of native soils to agricultural and regenerating sites. This work provides critical insights into how subsurface soil alterations affect the ability of landscapes to capture and retain moisture and carbon in a changing climate.
