Researchers from New Zealand and Canada are launching a five-year study in Hawke's Bay to investigate marine carbon dioxide removal. The project focuses on how naturally occurring alkalinity from rivers and limestone catchments helps the ocean absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere. By mapping water chemistry and pH levels around river mouths, the team aims to understand how to scale these natural processes to fight climate change. This research provides a safer alternative to experimental mCDR techniques by studying existing natural mechanisms.
